1983 Detroit Tigers Replay

Kansas City 4 Detroit 0 Detroit 2 Kansas City 1 (12 innings)

The Detroit Tigers split a twinbill with the Kansas City Royals, getting shutout in the opener, 4-0, by Paul Splittorff and winning a 2-1, 12 inning thriller in game two.

Splittorff worked hard for his whitewash, as he scattered seven hits and two walks, mixed in with four strikeouts, but he was somehow able to keep Detroit off the scoreboard.

Losing pitcher Jack Morris(13-6) was coming off three straight complete game wins, but despite going six and two third innings, he didn’t have his good stuff in this game. Willie Wilson had two hits and scored two of the Royals’ four runs.

The second game started out to be a pitchers duel for the ages. Juan Berenguer, in a spot start, squared off against Gaylord Perry. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, when Kirk Gibson singled, moved to third on a Marty Castillo double, then scored when Alan Trammell hit a sacrifice fly.

Berenguer continued to put up zeros until the ninth inning. He was two outs away from a shutout win when Willie Mays Aikens hit a solo homerun to tie the game. Juan got the final two outs in the top of the ninth, but the Tigers were unable to score against Perry, or Dan Quisenberry, who finally relieved Gaylord after he allowed a leadoff single to John Wockenfuss in the home ninth.

Willie Wilson singled and stole second in the tenth, but the rally died, likewise for Lance Parrish, who hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the eleventh, but was stranded.

Finally, in the Tiger 12th, Gibson laced a triple into the corner to start the inning. Castillo popped out, but Trammell singled in the game winner, for a 2-1 victory. Aurelio Lopez(8-3) earned the win out of the bullpen.

Other scores: Cleveland 16 Toronto 11; Baltimore 6 Texas 0; Milwaukee 7 Boston 5; New York 12 Chicago 6.
