August 3 Detroit 5 Chicago 1
Jack Morris pitched 8 innings of solid ball, as he improves to 14-6, by helping Detroit to a 5 to 1 won over the White Sox. Morris allowed just one run, which was unearned, in the fourth inning. He was trying to pitch the entire game, however, when he surrendered a double to Harold Baines and a single to Greg Luzinski to open the bottom of the ninth, he was relieved by Aurelio Lopez.
Lopez got Greg Walker to ground into a double play, then retired Ron Kittle for the final out.
For the Tigers, Glenn Wilson had three hits, and Lou Whitaker(12) and John Wockenfuss(7) each homered.
The win puts the Tigers in sole possession of second place for the first time since July 10th.
The series concludes today, with Dan Petry to face Richard Dotson.
