MORRIS PUTS TIGERS ON HIS BACK; SALVAGES LAST GAME WITH SHUTOUT WIN
As he has been all year, Jack Morris(15-6) was the slump stopper. His 2-0 shutout win, his fourth whitewash this season, allowed the Detroit Tigers to salvage the final game after dropping the first two to New York.
The game was a pitching battle between Morris and Ron Guidry, neither of who gave up a run through the first six innings. In the top of the sixth, Guidry loaded the bases on a walk and two singles, and the Yanks called on Goose Gossage. The Goose was true to form, fanning John Wockenfuss, Alan Trammell and Wayne Krenchicki in order, to squash the threat.
New York had runners on first and third with one out, but a 6-4-3 twin killing ended that scoring opportunity. Morris trudged along, seemingly getting stronger as the game went on. He surrendered just one hit the rest of the way, striking out six and walking two, against five hits.
Finally, in the top of the ninth, Larry Herndon led off with a double. Glenn Wilson followed with a single. Gossage got the next two, but Krenchicki’s basehit scored Herndon, and Whitaker’s hit plated Wilson for a two run Detroit lead. Morris retired the side in order for the win.
The Orioles lost, so Detroit gains a game back and are 3 out. The Tigers head back home to take on the Chicago White Sox, starting with a doubleheader tommorrow.
