BULLPEN BOMBED AS YANKS SCORE SEVEN RUNS IN EIGHTH INNING
The Tigers led 3-0 heading into the eighth inning, with Glenn Abbott pitching scoreless ball to that point. He retired Dave Winfield on a flyout to get the first out of the inning, then allowed back to back singles to Ken Griffey and Don Baylor.
That’s when things went from bad to as worse as it can get. Dave Rozema relieved Abbott, and promptly surrendered a two run double to Steve Kemp. Lou Pinella then hit a short base hit into left, putting runners on the corners.
Rozema fanned Rick Cerone for the second out of the inning, but Andre Robertson singled to drive in Kemp.
Aurelio Lopez took over for Rozema and was greeted with another rbi single by Roy Smalley. The coup de grace was a three run homerun by Graig Nettles.
Detroit didn’t roll over and die, getting a pair of runs in their half of the eighth, but the damage was done. Those two runs would get Rozema off the hook and put the losing pitcher tag on Lopez(8-6), his third consecutive defeat.
Baltimore beat Chicago again, so the Tigers drop to two games back. Meanwhile, the Yankees have climbed to within a half game of first place.
