1983 Detroit Tigers Replay

August 23rd. Detroit 4 Texas 1 11 innings

GIBSON’S 3 RUN BLAST IN 11TH PUSHES TIGERS BY RANGERS

Kirk Gibson’s(9) three run homer in the top of the eleventh, gave the Detroit Tigers a wild, 4-1 win over the Texas Rangers in Arlington.

Gibson, who was 0-4 with two strikeouts to that point, sent a Danny Darwin fastball over the fence with two aboard in the top of the eleventh inning. The big blow broke a 1-1 tie. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the fourth, when Alan Trammell singled, stole second, and later scored on an error.

Tiger starter, Glenn Abbott pitched extremely well, allowing 0 runs on just 3 hits over the first seven innings, but his tank ran dry in the eighth, when he was tagged by Mickey Rivers for a single, Jim Sundberg for a double, and then allowed a second single to Jim Anderson.

Aurelio Lopez(9-6) was brilliant in relief, tossing four innings of shutout ball in relief, to earn the win.

The Orioles lost to Toronto, so Detroit gains a game back. Milwaukee remains a half game out.

Other scores: Toronto 9 Baltimore 3; California 5 Cleveland 2; Seattle 5 Milwaukee 0; Minnesota 3 Boston 2; Oakland 9 New York 3
