September 4th Game # 136 Detroit 2 Toronto 0
WILSON’S TWO RUN HR IN 12TH ENDS PITCHER’S DUEL FOR THE AGES
Toronto’s Dave Stieb is a # 1 pitcher. Detroit’s Glenn Abbott is the # 4 man in the Tigers rotation. But you would never have noticed the disparity in this game.
Stieb went ten innings, Abbott nine, with neither willing to buckle, until finally, Glenn Wilson(6) stroked a homer with Lance Parrish aboard, in the top of the 12th.
Abbott only fanned three, to Stieb’s nine, but he stayed stride for stride with the Blue Jay ace, at one point retiring 14 in a row.
Dave Rozema (7-7) took over for an exhausted Abbott in the 10th. He set down the side in order in the Toronto tenth. Joey McLaughlin took the hill for Stieb in the top of the 11th. He issued one walk, but got out of trouble.
The 12th inning would be another story. After getting the first out, McLaughlin gave up a single to Parrish, then surrendered a line drive home run off the bat of Wilson, which ended the scoreless streak. Doyle Alexander came on to get the final two outs.
When Rozema issued a leadoff single to Willie Upshaw to begin the Toronto twelfth, Aurelio Lopez took the reins. The drama wasn’t over, as he walked Jorge Orta, bringing the tying run to the dish.
Lopez buckled down, striking out Eddie Whitt, then getting Jesse Barfield to hit into a 6-4-3 double play.
Once again, though, the Orioles won, so the Tigers remain 3.5 games behind. They now travel to Cleveland to battle the last place Indians.
