INDIANS ONCE AGAIN BEAT TIGERS IN SHOCKING FASHION
If the Detroit Tigers end up falling short of Baltimore in the pennant race, this game may be looked back on as the turning point.
Tiger ace, Jack Morris had pitched, probably his best eight innings of ball all year, but as we all know, a baseball game is nine innings long.
After allowing one hit, one walk, and striking out five over those first five innings, Morris tried to go the distance, as he had many times before, and came up short, as Detroit dropped a 3-2 shocker to Cleveland.
Morris, with a 2-0 lead, began the top of the ninth by walking Mike Hargrove. Toby Harrah then hit a grounder, forcing Hargrove, but reached on the fielder’s choice. A Bake McBride single made it first and third, but surely Jack could get slow footed, Gorman Thomas to hit into a game ending double play.
Sadly, it was not to be. Thomas roped a double into the gap, scoring Harrah, and putting men on second and third.
Detroit pulled the plug on Jack, and went to Aurelio Lopez. His first pitch to Ron Hassey bounced in the dirt, and McBride raced home on the wild pitch, tying the game.
Then Hassey, who had whiffed his first three times up, stroked a clean single, plating Thomas with the go ahead run.
Lopez got the final two outs, but the horse was out of the barn, and the Tigers went meekly in the home ninth.
To make the gut punch worse, Baltimore swept a twinbill from Boston, pushing Detroit 4.5 games behind.
