TIGERS HOLD OFF LATE CHARGE TO BEAT RED SOX

Detroit built up an 8-0 lead, then held on, as walks and errors allowed Boston to make a late charge, but in the end, the Tigers came away with a 9-5 victory.

Matt Wilcox(13-12), had one of the wildest games a pitcher can have. He allowed only four hits, and was pitching a shutout until Carl Yastremski homered in the seventh. But Wilcox walked more than he struck out (5 to 4), the free passes allowing a run in the eighth, and, combined with a two base error by Larry Herndon, Boston tallied three more runs in the ninth. Dave Rozema finally squashed the threat.

Wocky, Cabell, Lemon each had two rbi’s. Glenn Wilson hit his 8th home run, a three run blast, in the second inning.

Baltimore beat Milwaukee, so Detroit remains 4 back.

Other scores: Baltimore 8 Milwaukee 1; Minnesota 11 Toronto 4. New York and Cleveland ppd rain.
