TIGERS STUN ORIOLES WITH TWINBILL SWEEP! DRAMA IN 9TH IN BOTH GAMES

After beating Baltimore yesterday, the Detroit Tigers stunned the Orioles today, winning both ends of a double header, and further, both games had tense drama in the ninth inning.

In game one, Baltimore’s Mike Boddecker was locked in a pitching battle with Milt Wilcox(14-12). Each hurler posted zeros across the board until the bottom of the ninth. Boddecker in fact, had a no hitter through six, retiring the first 18 batters in a row.

In the bottom of the ninth, Chet Lemon broke through with a key single. That brought up, Glenn Wilson, who, with a hitting streak on the line, and after striking out his first two at bats, laced a double into the alley in right center.

Lemon turned on the jets, and scored all the way from first base, giving Detroit a thrilling 1-0 win.

Game two saw the Tigers break out to a 3-0 lead. Lou Whitaker hit his 18th homer in the first. A two base error in the fourth by Dan Ford led to another two runs for the Tigers.

Starter Glenn Abbott(12-12) was looking to go the distance, but after getting the first out in the top of the ninth, surrendered a double to Eddie Murray, a single to Ken Singleton, then a second two bagger to Gary Roenicke. That hit plated Murray, and put runners on second and third.

Abbott was pulled for Aurelio Lopez. The reliever gave up a sac fly to Gary Nolan, for the Orioles second run. The throw was cut off, so Roenicke stayed at second base. Lopez muffed a come backer off the bat of Rich Dauer, sending the tying run to third base.

However, Ken Sakata flew out to right to end the game.

The two wins puts Detroit 1.5 games out of first place.

Other scores: Boston 3 New York 1; Milwaukee 10 Cleveland 7; Toronto 4 Seattle 1.
