ORIOLES DRAW FIRST BLOOD; BEAT TIGERS 6-3 TO REGAIN FIRST PLACE

JOE NOLAN HITS 3 RUN HOMER IN BOTTOM OF NINTH TO STUN DETROIT

Baltimore fired the opening salvo in the series against the Tigers, beating Detroit, 6-3.

Jack Morris fell behind early, thanks to home runs by Todd Cruz and Eddie Murray. Trailing, 3-0, Detroit would get on the board in the top of the fifth. Glenn Wilson doubled, then Lou Whitaker tripled, to make it 3-1.

The Tigers rallied to tie the game in the top of the eighth. Whitaker stroked a two bagger, and after Alan Trammell popped out, Larry Herndon singled Lou home. Lance Parrish followed with another single, putting runners on first and second.

That would end Scott McGregor’s day, as Sammy Stewart took over out of the bullpen. He struck out John Wockenfuss, but then Enos Cabell reached on a Cruz error, loading the bases.

Chet Lemon singled in Herndon with the tying run. A gallant Morris pitched the last of the eighth, confident that Dave Rozema , who had been winning pitcher in his last three appearances, would be able to finish Baltimore off in the ninth.

It was not to be. Cal Ripken led off with single. Rozema was able to retire both Murray and John Lowenstein, but then Ken Singleton doubled, sending Ripken to third.

Joe Nolan then put a stamp on the Orioles win with a soaring, three run home run over the center field wall.

The win flip flops the Orioles and Tigers in the standings. Now Detroit trails by a half game. Game two will pit Dan Petry against Mike Boddicker.

Other scores: California 7 Toronto 1; Milwaukee 8 Cleveland 4; New York 7 Boston 2.
