CECIL COOPER HOME RUN ENDS TIGERS SEASON

DETROIT LOSES, 4-3; BALTIMORE BEATS YANKS, 2-0 TO WIN DIVISION

The Detroit Tigers put up a battle, but in the end, fell a game short, as they dropped a 4-3 decision in their final game against the Brewers; while Baltimore was beating the Yankees to take the A.L. Eastern Division Crown.

Solo homers accounted for four of the six runs in the Brewers-Tigers battle, but it was Cecil Cooper’s blast in the top of the 10th, which sounded the death knell for Detroit.

Larry Herndon(15) went deep in the bottom of the first, putting the Tigers up, 1-0. Milwaukee’s Ned Yost answered with a solo shot in the top of the fifth, knotting the score at 1 each.

Tom Brookens responded with his eighth of the season in the same inning, putting Detroit up, 2-1.

In the top of the eighth, Paul Molitor doubled off starter, Dan Petry and one batter later, Cooper singled him home, again tying the score.

Lou Whitaker(19) answered the bell in the bottom of the eighth, sending the first pitch he saw from Brewers reliever, George Foster over the wall, to give the Tigers a one run lead with an inning to play.

But Detroit couldn’t hold the lead. Larry Herndon made a killer, two base error that allowed Jim Gantner to reach, and Mike Edwards later tripled off Aurelio Lopez, who had relieved Petry. Once again the score was tied, this time at 3 all.

Foster stayed in for Milwaukee, and survived the ninth. That set the stage for Cooper’s clutch homer in the top of the tenth. Foster then set the Tigers down in order to end the game and Detroit’s season.
