The Pittsburgh Pirates got out of the gate in a big way, bombing the Chicago Cubs, 11-1.

Wally Westlake(2) belted a pair of homers, and Ralph Kiner(1) and Danny Murtaugh(1) had one each. Murtaugh also tripled and Ed Stevens and Dixie Walker hit two baggers.

Rip Sewell(1-0) picked up the opening day, complete game victory. He allowed just one run on five hits.
