PIRATES IMPLODE IN SEVENTH INNING IN 7-0 LOSS TO PHILLIES
What began as a pitcher’s duel between Pittsburgh’s Rip Sewell and Philadelphia’s Russ Meyer, turned into an ugly rout, as the Phillies scored seven times in the bottom of the seventh, to win going away.
The two hurlers had traded zeroes through six and a half innings when, with one out in the Phils seventh, the wheels came off. Willie Jones homered off Sewell, Eddie Miller was hit by a pitch, catcher Andy Seminick doubled, Meyer grounded out but Miller scored.
Sewell was pulled for Ray Poat, who was completely ineffective. Richie Ashburn and Granny Hamner both singled, then Eddie Waitkus and Del Ennis hit back to back doubles.
Finally, Bill Nicholson, who began the inning with a flyout, struck out to end the agony.
In the meantime, Russ Meyer stayed sharp for the Phillies, finishing with a four hit shutout.
