CARDS HARRY “THE CAT” BREECHEN LOSES NO HIT BID IN 9TH

St. Louis lefty, Harry Breechen just missed a no hitter when Bucs catcher, Clyde McCullough singled to start the bottom of the ninth inning, but settled for a one hit, 5-0 shutout.

Breechen was nearly unhittable, setting down the first 17 men he faced, before pinch hitter, Jack Phillips drew a walk in the sixth.

The game began as a pitcher’s duel, but Pirates starter, Bill Werle(1-3) allowed four runs in the top of the sixth.

In addition to his tremendous effort on the hill, Breechen, a fine hitting pitcher, had three singles.
