BUCS END SKID WITH MEMORIAL DAY DOUBLE HEADER SWEEP OF CUBS

It was Memorial Day, and in the big leagues, that means double headers. The Pittsburgh Pirates marked the holiday by ending an ugly 7 game losing skid with two victories over the Chicago Cubs.

In the opener, Bill Werle(2-5) won his second game of the year with a 6-3 win, after dropping his last four decisions. Ralph Kiner knocked out his (18th) homer and reached base on four straight walks. The Cubs allowed 9 free passes in the game. Ed Stevens and Dixie Walker had two hits each.

The second game was a straight up pitcher’s duel, with Bob Chesnes and Cal McLish trading zeroes for most of the game.

McLish finally buckled in the last of the ninth, allowing two straight singles to Kiner and Westlake. At that point, McLish was relieved by Lade, but he also gave up a single to Stevens. Bockman’s sac fly then plated Kiner with the winning run.

Chesnes(2-4) earned the win, and also got his first complete game and shutout. He limited Chicago to just five hits.
