PIRATES, CHAMBERS STOMPED BY PHILLIES
The hits rattled off the outfield walls of Philadelphia’s Shibe Park like machine gun fire.
In just one and a third innings, Pittsburgh’s Cliff Chambers(4-3), in his worst outing this year, gave up a home run, two triples, two doubles, three singles and a walk, as the Phillies tallied nine runs over the first two innings.
Surprisingly, the Bucs didn’t wave the white flag, and put up seven runs of their own, with each team getting 18 hits in the game. Ralph Kiner(19), who hadn’t hit a home run since May 30th, did so today, while Danny Murtaugh added three hits.
But they were no match for Del Ennis, who tripled twice and singled, nor Stan Holling, who was 4-5, with a triple. Those two, along with three hits from Eddie Miller, and a two run homer from Andy Semanick, sealed the Pirates fate.
