1949 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

June 8. Gm# 47 Shibe Park Philadelphia 9 Pittsburgh 6

POOR PIRATE PITCHING + DEL ENNIS’ BAT LEADS TO PHILS WIN

Pittsburgh had a 6-4 lead in the top of the eighth, but squandered it when reliever Hal Greer, walked two batters, threw two wild pitches, then surrendered a two run single allowing Philadelphia to tie the game in their half of the inning.

Vic Lombardi(1-2) took the loss in the bottom of the ninth, when he gave up a walk to Richie Ashburn, a single to Eddie Waitkus, then a three run death blow to Del Ennis.

It was the big left fielder’s second circuit clout of the game. He hit his first three run smash off starter, Rip Sewell, in the fifth. Ennis ended with two homers, six runs batted in and two walks.

For Pittsburgh, Dino Restelli, Ralph Kiner and Wally Westlake all tripled, the most three baggers by the Bucs in a game this year.

National League scores: Boston 8 Cincinnati 7; Brooklyn 3 Chicago 1; St. Louis 2 New York 1.
