GIANTS SHOCK PIRATES WITH 6 RUNS IN BOTTOM OF NINTH

In what was probably the most gut wrenching Pirate loss this year, Tiny Bonham and Ray Poat combined to blow a 6-1 lead, allowing New York to score six runs in their final inning and beat Pittsburgh, 7-6.

Bonham, relieved Vic Lombardi, who was making a very solid spot start, after toiling for six innings. Tiny got through the seventh and eighth unscathed, but began the Giant ninth by surrendering a leadoff triple to Williard Marshall. Ray Mueller singled him in, to make it 6-2. Buddy Kerr walked, and the Pirates sent in Poat, who quickly gave up a single to pinch hitter Hank Thompson, loading the bases.

Poat then walked Bill Rigney, forcing in New York’s second run of the inning. Whitey Lockman then hit a grounder to Murtaugh, who’s only play was at first. That allowed Kerr to score.

Sid Gordon then clubbed a three run, game winning home run, sending the Polo Grounds crowd into a frenzy.

On the Bucs side, Ed Stevens hit his first home run, and also doubled. Stan Rojek had two hits and two rbi’s. Ralph Kiner has cooled off. He is 0-8 with a walk in his last two games.
