PIRATES SCORE A DOZEN RUNS; WIN BY ONE
It’s not often a team puts up 12 runs and the final score is a nail biter, but that’s what happened as the Bucs and Cubs locked up in a slugfest, which Pittsburgh held on to win, 12-11.
It was a game that featured a grand slam by each team, one by Chicago’s Hank Sauer, who continues to feast on Pirate pitching; and another by Pittsburgh’s Clyde McCullough(2), one of two homers the Bucs’ catcher had on the day. McCullough had not homered before today’s game.
What hurt the Pirates was errors. Stan Rojek and Marty Basgall each made one, but together they led to five unearned runs.
What hurt the Cubs was walks. Chicago pitchers issued seven free passes, five of which scored.
Pittsburgh wraps the the series with a double header tomorrow.
