July 10. Gm#’s 76-77. Forbes Field Pittsburgh 2, 12 Chicago 1, 5

DOUBLE HEADER IS A TALE OF TWO GAMES; BUT BUCS WIN BOTH

The two games in the Pirates-Cubs most recent twinbill couldn’t have been more different.

The opener was a squeaker, which Pittsburgh won 2-1, Ray Poat(1-3) getting the win in eleven innings, after starter Cliff Chambers had toiled for 10 full frames.

The nightcap saw the Bucs win a slugfest, hammering out 12 runs, in a game that featured seven home runs.

Hank Sauer tied New York’s Sid Gordon for most homers in a game this year, by bashing three against Pirate pitching. Andy Pafko and Hal Jeffcoat also went deep.

For Pittsburgh, Wally Westlake(11) and Clyde McCullough hit home runs. Tiny Bonham(2-2) earned the win in a spot start.

This is the midway point in the season. Pittsburgh is currently in sixth place, 9 games under .500. Star, Ralph Kiner has 33 home runs, as he tries to break the Strat season home run record held by Bob Cerv of Kansas City with 49.

Kiner is far and away the best position player at the break, hitting .338 with 33 home runs, 76 runs batted in and 66 runs scored.

Cliff Chambers has been the best pitcher. He is 7-3 with a 3.31ERA. He has 62 strikeouts against 25 walks.

After the break, the season resumes on July 14.

National League scores: Brooklyn 7 New York 3; St. Louis 4 Cincinnati 2, St. Louis 7 Cincinnati 4; Boston-Philadelphia- rained out.
