KINER, SEWELL, BONHAM ARE KEY COGS IN PIRATES’ DH SWEEP OF BOSTON

Pittsburgh took both ends of a double header from the Boston Braves, winning, 6-2 and 2-1.

The big bat of Ralph Kiner was instrumental in both games. In the opener, Ralph smacked a three run homer(37) in the first inning, then singled in a run later in the top of the fifth.

In the second game, Tiny Bonham and Bill Voiselle were locked up in a scoreless battle until the top of the seventh. At that point, with Ed Stevens and Dino Restelli on base, Kiner once again came through, belting a two run double, as the Bucs held on for a 2-1 victory.

On the pitching side of things, Rip Sewell(5-8) threw a solid eight innings in the first game, giving up two runs on just three hits. Really, the only down side of Rip’s effort was walks. He gave up seven base on balls, but fortunately, only two of those led to runs.

In game two, Tiny Bonham(4-2) was terrific on the mound. He got his second complete game in the 2-1 win, scattering seven hits, while fanning six.

The Pirates now head back to Pittsburgh for a lengthy home stand, beginning with the New York Giants.
