PIRATES WIN IN EXTRA INNINGS ON WALK OFF WALK

Boy, this game had everything. And finished in the eleventh inning when Wally Westlake walked to force in Pete Castigilano with the winning run.

Pittsburgh quickly got up 4-0 in the bottom of the first. Ralph Kiner(38) hit a two run homer, the next batter, Westlake(13) hit a solo shot, and later in the inning, starting pitcher, Vic Lombardi singled in a run.

The Giants cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth. Lombardi walked the first two he faced, and later, Bobby Thomson hit a two run single.

Westlake(14) hit his second home run of the day in the bottom of the fifth, to put the Bucs up, 5-2.

Thomson collected another rbi, when he singled in Whitey Lockman, who had doubled in the top of the seventh.

In the top of the eighth, Sid Gordon opened the inning by singling off Hal Gregg. Elmer Riddle replaced Gregg, and promptly issued a second single, this time to Bill Rigney, and then worse, a three run homer to Wes Westrum. That put the Giants in front for the first time in the game, 6-5.

Ed Fitzgerald answered the bell with a clutch leadoff triple in the Pirate eighth. Danny Murtaugh’s single quickly tied the game at six.

Neither team scored in the tenth. In the bottom of the eleventh, New York’s Adrian Zabala gave up a single to Castigilano, then walked Ed Stevens.

Red Webb took over for the Giants and got Dino Restelli to line out to third. Then Kiner hit a ball to Rigney, which he misplayed, his second error of the game. That sent up Westlake, who worked a six pitch walk, sending Castigilano home with the winning tally.

Hugh Casey(1-3) picked up his first win, with three innings of scoreless relief.
