BUCS SPLIT TWINBILL ON BACK OF FITZGERALD’S 3 RUN, GAME WINNING HR
The Pirates earned a split with the Boston Braves, thanks to a game winning, three run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, by catcher, Ed Fitzgerald(1). The Buc backstop couldn’t have picked a better time for his first homer of the year.
Pittsburgh trailed 4-2 against Bill Voiselle, who had worked the whole game. He retired Ed Stevens, for the first out in the ninth, but Dino Restelli tagged Voiselle with a double.
Boston stuck with Voiselle, who got the dangerous Ralph Kiner to line out to shortstop. With two out, Dixie Walker singled, with Restelli having to hold at third.
With runners on first and third, the Braves rolled the dice and kept Voiselle on the hill. Ed Fitzgerald, who was 1-4 against him, stepped in. Eddie was up to the task, as he blasted a Voiselle offering over the fence for a game winner, as the Bucs took it, 5-4. (HR was on pitcher’s card, HR 1-4, I rolled a 3.)
There were three other home runs in the game, by Boston’s Bob Elliott and Connie Ryan; for Pittsburgh, Dino Restelli(10) also went deep.
Fitzgerald’s homer got Elmer Riddle(4-0) out of the fire and back into the frying pan. Riddle had surrendered Boston’s fourth run, on three hits, in the top of the ninth.
The first game was all Boston. Johnny Sain had the Pirates eating out of his hand. He spun a four hit shutout, in a 7-0 Braves rout.
Del Crandall belted a two run home run, and Ed Stanky, Sibby Sisti, Jim Russell and Connie Ryan all doubled.
Cliff Chambers(7-6) lost his third straight decision.
