HARRY GUMBERT FOLDS IN 9TH AS BUCS DROP 4-2 DECISION
Heading into the ninth, the score between Brooklyn and Pittsburgh was tied at 2 all. All four runs came on home runs.
Brooklyn’s Jackie Robinson got the scoring started with a two run shot in the very first inning. Dino Restelli(12), who has homered in three straight games, hit a solo homer to halve the lead in the fourth.
Then in the bottom of the fifth, Wally Westlake(15) sent Ralph Branca to the showers, by drilling a solo blast, which tied the game at two apiece.
Tiny Bonham took over for starter, Vic Lombardi, and did a great job in relief, pitching a scoreless seventh and eighth. Bonham was pinch hit for by Jack Phillips, in an effort to take the lead.
That put Harry Gumbert(1-1) on the hill in the top of the ninth. Things didn’t go well. Pee Wee Reese immediately put the Dodgers on top, with the game’s fourth home run.
Marv Rackley then tripled into the corner, and Duke Snider singled to give Brooklyn an insurance run.
