BUCS DROP BOTH ENDS OF TWINBILL; PHILS TAKE 3 OF 4 IN SERIES
The Philadelphia Phillies won both ends of a double header against Pittsburgh, taking the first game, 9-6 and winning the night cap, 5-3. Philadelphia ended up winning three out of four in the latest series with the Buccos.
Game one saw the Phils win a game of home run derby. Del Ennis, Willie Jones, Bill Nicholson and Ed Seminick all went deep for Philadelphia. Ennis also doubled and singled, while Richie Ashburn had three hits, including a triple.
For Pittsburgh, Ralph Kiner(43) and Dino Restelli(13) hit home runs. Ray Poat(2-5) lost in relief, having allowed three runs in 3.2 innings pitched.
The second game was closer, but some great relief pitching by Philadelphia’s Charlie Bicknell, insured the win. Bicknell took over for starter, Blix Donnelly in the sixth. He recorded the first out, but ran in to trouble, as Castigilone singled, Kiner tripled to score him, then Wally Westlake singled, scoring Kiner.
The Phillies stayed with Bicknell and he rewarded them by retiring the next eleven men he faced.
Hal Greer(5-3) took the loss in relief of Bob Chesnes.
