9TH INN RALLY FALLS SHORT AS CUBS WIN FINAL GAME OF SERIES, 4-3.
Pittsburgh left the tying and go ahead runs on in the top of the ninth, enabling the Chicago Cubs to come away with a 4-3 win, taking the final game, in a three game series.
The Pirates had a hard time solving Cubs’ starter, Monk Dubiel. Monk had six, 1,2,3 innings in eight innings pitched, but he stumbled in the ninth, as he tried for the complete game win.
Chicago led 4-2 for much of the game, Dubiel’s only mistake was Ed Stevens(8) tagging him for a two run homer, and that was unearned.
In the top of the ninth, Tom Saffell led off with a two bagger. When Stevens singled him in for the Pirates third run, Chicago replaced Dubiel with Cal McLish. The reliever got Ralph Kiner, who was 0-4, to fly out to short left field.
Dino Restelli then reached on Chicago’s second error of the game. But McLish buckled down and got both Pete Castigilano and Monty Basgall to end the ball game.
Bill Werle(3-11), who pitched 3.2 innings in relief, was tagged with the loss.
Things don’t get any easier for the Pirates. They now head to St. Louis to face the first place Cardinals.
