1949 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

August 14. Gm# 108 Sportsman’s Park St. Louis 7 Pittsburgh 0

HOWIE POLLETT WHITEWASHES BUCS, 7-0; KINER 3 FOR LAST 21 AT BATS

St. Louis ace Howie Pollett spanked the Bucs like a naughty child, tossing a 3 hit shutout.

Not that the Cardinals needed any extra help, but the Pirates decided to chip in with three errors, two by Danny Murtaugh in the same inning. Five of the seven St. Louis runs were unearned against losing pitcher, Cliff Chambers(9-7).

Stan Musial had a single, double and triple; Enos Slaughter, a single and double and Red Schoendiest, two singles and a sac fly.

It might be time to whisper the dreaded “S” word in regards to Ralph Kiner. The Bucs slugger is just 3 for his last 21 at bats and has been stuck on 43 home runs for seven games.

So the Cards take two out of three and Pittsburgh heads on to Cincinnati.

National League scores: Brooklyn 7 Boston 2; Cincinnati 4,8 Chicago 2, 0; New York 8, 1 Philadelphia 1, 0.
