MASI’S DOUBLE DOUBLE’S HELP PIRATES WIN OVER CARDS
Phil Masi stroked a pair of two baggers, the second scoring Pete Castigilano with what would prove to be the winning run, in a 6-5 Pirates win over the Cardinals.
St. Louis’ starter Gerry Staley began by dominating the Bucs, setting down the first 12 he faced, before Pittsburgh broke through with 3 runs in the fifth inning.
Despite allowing four runs on seven hits, Bob Chesnes(7-5) was able to earn the win, thanks to the Bucs putting up three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Tiny Bonham pitched three innings of solid relief to notch the save. Wally Westlake singled twice, scored and drove in one run.
Ralph Kiner was hitless, however, he did walk twice and scored once.
