1949 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

August 20. Gm# 113 Forbes Field St. Louis 3 Pittsburgh 1

BUCS KICK AWAY GAME TO CARDS WITH 3 ERRORS

St. Louis evened their series with Pittsburgh, as the Pirates handed them this one on a silver platter.

Stan Rojek, Tom Saffell and Ralph Kiner all committed errors in the field, none more costly than Kiner’s two base gaffe in the top of the fifth.

In that inning, Stan Musial tripled, then Enos Slaughter doubled. However Kiner turned that into another run when he misplayed the ball off the wall, then threw wildly in an effort to nab Slaughter, who was trying to stretch it into a triple.

Kiner did get two singles, but still has not hit a home run in his last ten games.

Pittsburgh’s lone run came in the seventh, when Phil Masi scored on Eddie Bockman’s groundout.

Cliff Chambers took the loss, falling to (9-8).

A double header tomorrow concludes the series.

National League scores: Boston 4 Brooklyn 0; Cincinnati 7 Chicago 4; Philadelphia 9 New York 3.
