1949 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

August 21. Gm#’s 114, 115 Forbes Field Pittsburgh 5, 2 St. Louis 4, 17

CARDS-BUCS SPLIT; KINER ENDS HR DROUGHT; PIRATES SHELLED IN GAME TWO

The Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals split a double header at Forbes Field. The Buccos won a close first game, 5-4, then were demolished in game two, 17-2.

Ralph Kiner(44) hit a ball out of the park for the first time in eleven games. His last home run before this one came on August 5th. The three run, fifth inning shot was a key part in the Pirates win.

However, it was Wally Westlake’s(6) solo shot in the seventh that proved to be the game winner.

Murray Dickson(6-9), like Bill Werle, banished to the bullpen, earned the win in a solid relief appearance. He pitched scoreless ball for 3.2 innings, on just two hits, while fanning six.

Game two was another story altogether. The Cardinals set a new Stratball record for most runs in a game by one team with 17.

After winning his first two starts, rookie, Junior Walsh(2-1) found things not so easy this time around. Walsh allowed five runs on seven hits in just 4.2 innings. He also walked four, and even worse, had two wild pitches, both with runners on third base.

The Cards offense included: Red Schoendiest: 4-5 with a walk and four runs scored; Stan Musial: 3-6 with a double and three runs scored and Ron Northey, who had a single, double and a grand slam.

All told, four Pirate pitchers surrendered 17 runs on 17 hits, while walking 10.

National League scores: Boston 5 Brooklyn 0; Chicago 5,1 Cincinnati 4,4; Philadelphia 4,2 New York 0, 4
