BUCS SPLIT TWIN BILL WITH PHILS; KINER HERO IN SECOND GAME

Pittsburgh won one of two against Philadelphia, both low scoring affairs.

Not one relief pitcher was used in either game, with Cliff Chambers(9-9) dropping a hard luck loss in game one.

Chambers battled Russ Meyer, with neither hurler willing to give an inch, that is until the Pirates broke through in the top of the eighth. Chambers helped his own cause with a ringing double, and scored the game’s first run on Stan Rojek’s rbi single.

The Bucs carried the 1-0 lead into the home half of the eighth, when Chambers began to run out of gas. With one out, Del Ennis singled. Chambers retired Stan Hollmig and it looked like he might get out of the jam.

However, Willie Jones doubled, sending Ennis to third. Mike Golait’s two run single put the Phillies in front. Meyer set the Bucs down 1,2,3 in the top of the ninth to seal the win, 2-1.

More solid pitching would highlight game two. Rip Sewell(7-8) against Robin Roberts. Rip allowed a run in the first, but was in command from that point on. Though he hit one batter and walked one, he also struck out nine.

Despite Sewell’s good pitching, the Pirates still trailed by a run. Ralph Kiner(45) would fix that. Rojek doubled to begin the ninth, then two batters later, the Bucs’ slugger would put his team ahead with his forty fifth home run of the year.

Sewell retired the Phillies in order in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.

National League scores: Cincinnati 4 Boston 3; Chicago 4, 1 Brooklyn 0, 3; St. Louis 5 New York 2.
