FOUR RUN 8TH HELPS WERLE GET WIN IN RELIEF
Junior Walsh started, and as in his previous start, ran into early trouble. The Pirates had scored a run in the top of the first inning, but Walsh gave up two runs in the bottom of the first to fall quickly behind.
Pittsburgh got a run in the fourth to tie the game at two all. Walsh had settled down somewhat, but again ran into difficulty in the sixth. He gave up a single to Del Ennis, then after fanning Hollmig, allowed a double to Willie Jones and a two run single to Mike Golait.
The Phillies had a 4-2 lead in the top of the seventh, when starter Ken Heitzelman hit a snag. Ed Stevens singled, then Heitzelman hit Marty Basgall with a pitch. Clyde McCullough hit a grounder which forced Basgall at second, putting runners on first and third, McCullough safe on the fielder’s choice.
Jack Phillips pinch hit for Walsh and got a clutch, two run triple, tying the game at 4 apiece.
The Pirates racked up four straight hits in the top of the eighth, by Kiner, Westlake, Castigilone and Stevens off reliever, Ken Trinkle. Philadelphia’s next relief pitcher, Charlie Bicknell surrendered the fifth hit and third run of the inning on a Basgall basehit.
McCollough hit into a double play, on which Stevens scored the fourth run of the inning. Pitcher Werle then struck out to end the inning.
Werle did give up a two run home run to Jones in the bottom of the eighth, but he had enough cushion to withstand it. He also struck out five batters in three innings pitched.
The two clubs complete the series tomorrow.
