PIRATES ONCE AGAIN STUN DODGERS; KINER SETS SEASON RBI RECORD
For the second day in a row, the Pittsburgh Pirates delivered a huge blow to the pennant hopes of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Pittsburgh pummeled Brooklyn, 8-3, with Ralph Kiner setting a new Stratball season high rbi mark at 115.
Kiner did not have a hit in the game, but walked with the bases loaded to set the new mark.
Crucial errors by Pee Wee Reese and Carl Furillo opened the floodgates to most of Pittsburgh’s runs.
Preacher Roe, in relief of Dodger starter, Jack Banta, bombed in his appearance, as did Joe Hatten, who followed Roe on the mound. Here was the sequence in the top of the eighth. After getting Kiner to fly out, Wally Westlake homered, Bockman walked, Murtaugh walked; Hatton took over for Roe. McCullough then reached on an error, pitcher, Chambers singled, Rojek singled, Ed Stevens walked, Tom Saffell lined out, Kiner, who began the inning, walked and finally, Westlake grounded to first.
Cliff Chambers(10-9) was the winner. All Brooklyn’s runs came on a three run homer by Duke Snider in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The series concludes today.
