KINER BELTS # 48; HOWEVER BUCS LOSE, 4-3
Ralph Kiner hit his 48th homer of the year, off Monk Dubiel, in the top of the seventh, as he continues his quest for a new single season mark.
Despite that home run, and one by Eddie Bockman(8), Pittsburgh was defeated by the Chicago Cubs, 4-3.
Before those two went deep, the Pirates trailed 4-0 for much of the game. Bob Chesnes started, and left after four innings, down 3-0. Ray Poat(2-6) gave up what would prove to be the winning run, one inning later.
The Bucs had a two out rally going in the top of the ninth, trailing by two runs. Wally Westlake singled, then Bockman doubled, putting men on second and third. Danny Murtaugh then singled, scoring Westlake. Bockman tried to beat Sauer’s throw from right field but was gunned down at the plate.
National League scores: New York 6 Brooklyn 3; Philadelphia 10 Boston 4; St. Louis and Cincinnati played to a 9-9 tie.
