CARDINALS SPOIL PIRATES’ LABOR DAY

A very good major league baseball team beat a not so good major league baseball team, twice, in a celebration of the nation’s workforce.

In a nutshell, that sums up Pittsburgh losing both games of a double header to St. Louis, by scores of 11-5 and 5-2.

In the opener, Hal Greer(5-4) was the unfortunate soul who, although he allowed only one run, it was one run more than the Pirates collected, so he got tagged with the loss.

It really was a tough break for Greer, as starter, Rip Sewell allowed 5 before he came in and Tiny Bonham, who followed Greer, gave up another five runs.

Stan Musial had a triple, two doubles and a single; Tommy Glaviano had a triple and two singles; Ron Northey reached base five times, with a single and four walks. Even little Red Schoendiest hit a home run.

The second game began as a scoreless pitcher’s duel between Junior Walsh and Gerry Staley. That lasted six innings. The Bucs even gave Walsh a cushion of two runs in the top of the seventh.

But the wheels came off in the bottom of the seventh, as St. Louis batted around, scoring five runs.

Ralph Kiner’s home run chase will have to wait, as he could only manage a single and three walks in two games.

Pittsburgh returns home to face the Cincinnati Reds in a three game series.
