BUCS 9TH INN RALLY FALLS SHORT; REDS WIN, 7-6

In a game that featured grand slams by both teams, Pittsburgh dropped a 7-6 decision to the Cincinnati Reds. A ninth inning rally brought the Buccos to within one run, but no closer.

The Reds led 5-0 after four innings, thanks to Dixie Howell’s grand slam home run, off Vic Lombardi, in the fourth. Lloyd Merriman homered in the top of the fifth, to give the Reds a six run lead.

A single, error and a walk loaded the bases for Pittsburgh in the home fifth. Wally Westlake(18) then smashed his first grand salami of the year, to pull the Pirates within two runs.

Cincy added a run in the sixth to extend their lead. Then came the Bucs last at bats. Working against Ewell Blackwell in relief, Marty Basgall singled. Phil Masi(1) then hit his first homer of the season, to put Pittsburgh down, 7-6.

Pinch hitter, Jack Phillips grounded to short, for the first out. Stan Rojek singled, and was sacrificed into scoring position by Tom Saffell. Ralph Kiner drew a walk. However, Westlake, the game’s early hero, could only ground weakly to first, ending the ballgame.

Ray Poat(2-7) worked three innings in relief and earned the loss.

National League scores: Brooklyn 10 Boston 2; Philadelphia 4, 1; New York 2, 4; St. Louis and Chicago did not play.
