1949 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

September 9. Gm# 134 Forbes Field Chicago 3 Pittsburgh 2

CUBS 3, BUCS 2; SLUMPING PIRATES DROP SIXTH STRAIGHT GAME

Pittsburgh’s downward spiral continues, as the worst team in the league, Chicago, beat them 3-2 at Forbes Field.

Rip Sewell(7-10) had a less than stellar start, allowing 3 runs on six hits, while walking four, in just five innings of work.

Tiny Bonham and Hal Gregg combined to keep the Cubs off the scoreboard the rest of the way, but once again, a lack of offense doomed the Pirates. Kiner, Rojek and Masi were hitless. Pittsburgh got an unearned run in the first, and Wally Westlake(19) hit a solo homer in the seventh, but that was it.

National League scores: New York 10 Brooklyn 1; Cincinnati 6 St. Louis 1; Philadelphia-Boston ppd rain.
