PIRATES SUFFER YET ANOTHER ONE RUN LOSS TO CUBS

If Pittsburgh were the only team Chicago had to play, the Cubs would be the National League Champions.

The last place Cubs did it again, handing the Pirates a second straight one run loss, 2-1.

The Buccos wasted a solid effort from Junior Walsh(3-3), who in seven innings pitched, allowed just one earned run(a second was unearned, more on that later) and scattered six hits, while striking out seven.

Unfortunately, Chicago starter, Dutch Leonard was even better, pitching eight scoreless frames, with nine punchouts.

Chicago’s first run, the unearned one, came in the top of the fourth. Walsh fanned Roy Smalley, to begin the inning, but lost Hank Sauer to a walk. Andy Pafko then singled. With two one, catcher, Ed Fitzgerald allowed a passed ball, and both runners advanced.

Fitzgerald blundered for a second time, when he mishandled Hal Jeffcoat’s dribbler in front of the plate, and threw late to first.

Walsh then struck out Mickey Owen, but walked Emil Verban, loading the bases. Fortunately, Leonard flew out to end the inning.

Chicago would collect their all important second run in the top of the sixth. With one out, Jeffcoat tripled, then Owen singled him in.

Despite scattered hits throughout the game, Pittsburgh couldn’t push a run across. In the bottom of the ninth, it appeared they might break through. After two quick outs, Eddie Bockman and Marty Basgall both singled.

Fitzgerald then redeemed himself somewhat for his earlier gaffes, by singling in Bockman to make it 2-1.

But with the tying and winning runs aboard, pinch hitter, Clyde McCullough, popped out to second base.

The Pirates have dropped seven straight games, matching their longest losing streak of the year, set back in May.
