1949 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

BUCS END LOSING STREAK THANKS TO KINER’S SECOND CHANCE GRAND SLAM

Ralph Kiner, tired both mentally and physically after a grueling season, strode to the plate in the first inning with the bases loaded. The Pirates’ left fielder appears to be pressing of late, as he chases the Stratball single season home run record.

Kiner quickly fell behind in the count, with one ball and two strikes on him. He was rubbing his eyes while at the plate, and just before Chicago’s Dewey Adkins threw the fourth pitch, Kiner asked for and was granted time out by home plate umpire, Lou Jorda.

The pitch sailed across the plate for what the Cubs believed was a strikeout, but Jorda waived it off. Kiner took full advantage of his second chance and sent the next offering over the right field wall.

That grand slam, Kiner’s second on the year, was his 49th home run, tying him with Bob Cerv ’58 K.C. for the single season Stratball record.

It also helped end a seven game losing skid for Pittsburgh, who defeated Chicago, 8-3.

Pete Castiglione had a perfect day at the plate, going 4-4. Wally Westlake’s 13 game hitting streak ended, as he went 0-4 with three strikeouts.

Pittsburgh decided to start Bill Werle(5-11) instead of Vic Lombardi today and it paid off. Werle got the win, working five innings. He allowed one run on five hits, struck out two and walked two.

There are no games scheduled in the National League on September 12. The Philadelphia Phillies come to town on Sept. 13.
