BUCCOS WIN EXTRA INNING SLUGFEST WITH PHILLIES
An offensive explosion took place at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, with the Pirates and Phillies combining for 21 runs and 34 hits.
When the dust cleared, Pittsburgh was a winner, 11 to 10 in ten innings. Philadelphia rocked Cliff Chambers for five runs in the very first inning, hitting a team cycle in the process. Richie Ashburn singled; Granny Hamner tripled; Bill Nicholson doubled and Willie Jones homered.
The Pirates would get their first run in the third inning, after Tom Saffell tripled and scored on Ed Steven’s sac fly.
The very next inning, Pittsburgh would erupt for 8 runs, highlighted by Wally Westlake’s(20)second grand slam of the year.
Pittsburgh added a run in the sixth, but Philadelphia refused to fold, scoring three in thes sixth and two more in the seventh.
The game was knotted at ten and moved into extra innings, the Bucs first game past regulation since July 27th.
Westlake was the hero, sending Saffell home with the winning run on tenth inning sacrifice fly.
In all, Pittsburgh used five pitchers, with Tiny Bonham(6-3), the last to go, getting the win.
In addition to Westlake’s offense, Pittsburgh had Saffell, who was 5-5 with a walk. He slugged a triple, double and three singles. Pete Castiglione had four hits, with a pair of two baggers and Ed Stevens had three hits and a sac fly.
