1949 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

BULLPEN LAYS AN EGG IN GIANTS’ 9-2 WIN OVER BUCS

Pittsburgh’s bullpen turned a 2-2 nail biter into a 9-2 laugher in the span of two innings.

Murray Dickson started and pitched well for the Pirates, staked to a two run lead thanks to Clyde McCullough’s triple in the fifth. Dickson himself provided the sacrifice fly leading to Pittsburgh’s first run.

Later in the inning, Stan Rojek walked, moved to third on Tom Saffell’s single, then scored on a Kirby Higbe wild pitch.

In the top of the fifth, Bobby Thomson erased all that good work with a two run home run. Still, the game was tied and obviously anybody’s to win.

That is, until Dickson was pinch hit for in the seventh and the bullpen doors swung open.

First out was Hal Gregg(5-5). He got Sid Gordon to ground out, but gave up a triple to Williard Marshall. Thomson singled in the go ahead run before Stan Lopata hit into a double play, ending the inning.

When Gregg came out for the ninth, he allowed a single to Bill Rigney and walked Wes Westrum.

Fearing things would get out of hand, the Bucs sagely went to Ray Poat, who is quickly becoming a mop up man extraoridinare. Pinch hitter, Pete Milne singled, loading the bases, then Davey Williams cheerfully stroked a two run single.

The litany of pain would continue. Lockman singled, another run. Gordon, not wanting to spoil his hitless day, flew out. Thomson singled, another run; Thomson hit a sacrifice fly, another run; Lopata tripled, scoring the sixth run of the inning.

The Pirates went meekly in the bottom of the ninth.

National League scores: Brooklyn 4 Chicago 0; Boston 6 Cincinnati 2; Philadelphia 4 St. Louis 3.
