KINER HOMERS (53) BUT PIRATES SUFFER TOUGH LOSS
Rip Sewell(7-12) outdueled Johnny Sain for most of the game, even taking a no hitter into the eighth inning, but his tank ran dry in the ninth, when Boston scored three runs to go on to a 3-2 win over Pittsburgh.
Sewell had issued three walks, but had not allowed a hit until Del Crandall’s eighth inning single. Rip, riding a 2-0 lead thanks to Kiner’s 53rd home run in the first inning and Clyde McCullough’s rbi single in the fifth, retired Sibby Sisti for the first out in the top of the ninth.
But Al Dark doubled and Elbie Fletcher and Bob Elliott followed with singles. With the score now, 2-1, Pittsburgh went to Hal Greer, who got Jim Russell to line out, however, he then walked Ed Sauer and then Connie Ryan stroked a two run single, to put Boston up for the first time in the game, 3-2.
Nels Potter took care of business in the bottom of the ninth, and again, the Bucs had blown another lead.
There are no scheduled National League games tomorrow.
Next, the Pirates head to Cincinnati for their final road series of the year.
