CHAMBERS GRINDS OUT COMPLETE GAME, 5-4 WIN OVER REDS
With the Pirates bullpen struggling, Cliff Chambers (13-10) hung in and notched a complete game, 5-4 win over the Reds, despite allowing 11 hits.
The Bucs opened the scoring with a run in the first, but fell behind, 3-1 in the bottom of the second, when Sammy Meeks, not known for power, hit a three run homerun. An error by Stan Rojek in that inning made all 3 runs unearned.
In the top of the fourth, back to back doubles by Dino Restelli and Wally Westlake and an rbi single by Phil Masi, allowed Pittsburgh to tie the game at 3.
The top of the eighth say Ralph Kiner triple into the corner, then Restelli drove him in with a single, for a 4-3 Bucs lead.
The Pirates got an insurance run in the top of the ninth which proved to be very important. After Reds reliever, Jess Dobernic got the first two outs, Rojek singled. Pete Castigliano also singled. A Dobernic wild pitch allowed both men to advance. Rojek then scored on a Walker Cooper passed ball.
Chambers had some drama in the last of the ninth. He, like Dobernic, retired the first two batters, but then Peanuts Lowrey doubled. Then Danny Litwhiler’s single brought in the fourth Reds run of the day.
Cliff was able to get Ted Kluszewski to ground out to end the game. The two teams play a double header tomorrow to end the series.
The St. Louis Cardinals become the first N.L. team to win 100 games this season.
National League scores: Brooklyn 8 Philadelphia 1; Boston 6 New York 4; St. Louis 9 Chicago 3.
