BUCS BLOW CHANCE TO TIE GAME IN 9TH; CARDS WIN, 2-1
Ralph Kiner stood perched on third base, with two out in the bottom of the ninth, after his triple plated Dino Restelli with Pittsburgh’s first run of the game, but Ed Stevens grounded to first, stranding Kiner, and preserving the Cardinals 2-1 win.
Junior Walsh(3-5) toiled for eight innings, but his own error in the first allowed Red Schoendiest to advance. He eventually scored on Marty Marion’s sacrifice fly, which put the Pirates in an early, 1-0 hole.
Walsh pitched very well from then on, but Joe Garagiola tapped him for a solo homerun in the top of the seventh, as the Cards took the two run lead into the last of the ninth.
Winning pitcher, Gerry Staley worked most of the game, limiting Pittsburgh to just five hits. After he gave up Kiner’s three bagger, Staley was lifted for reliever, Ken Johnson, who retired Stevens on a weak grounder to first base.
The Pirates host the Cincinnati Reds in the final series of the 1949 season, beginning tomorrow.
