PARNELL STARTS RED SOX SEASON WITH A FIVE HIT SHUTOUT
Mel Parnell(1-0) kicked off Boston’s 1949 campaign with a bang, spinning a five hit shutout against the Philadelphia Athletics.
Parnell took a no hitter into the sixth inning, when Eddie Joost broke it up with a double. The Boston hurler had set down the first seven batters before Pete Suder ended any chance of a perfect game by reaching on a Bobby Doerr error in the third.
Mel struck out five and did not walk a single batter. The Sox exploded for six runs in the top of the fifth, highlighted by Vern Stephens'(1) three run homerun. Ted Williams and Bobby Doerr both doubled, Al Zarilla and Bobby Goodman had two hits each, as did pitcher, Parnell.
Dom DiMaggio and Johnny Pesky chipped in with rbi’s on sacrifice flies.
