1949 Boston Red Sox Replay

April 22. Gm# 4 Fenway Park Boston 5 New York 2

RED SOX BEAT YANKEES, 5-2 TO WIN HOME OPENER

Boston found some two out lightning in the first inning. Dom DiMaggio and Johnny Pesky were quickly retired, but then Bobby Doerr singled, Ted Williams doubled, Vern Stephens singled, driving in Doerr. A Jerry Coleman error brought in Williams and Boston led, 2-0 against Allie Reynolds and the Yankees.

In the bottom of the second, four more Boston singles, and another error, this one by Reynolds, allowed two more runs to cross the plate.

Red Sox starter, Mickey McDermott(1-0), stumbled in the top of the third inning. After getting two quick outs, he gave up a double to Coleman, then walked three straight batters. However, McDermott then retired Yogi Berra, and only Coleman scored.

Coleman struck again, in the top of the fifth, with a solo homerun.

The Red Sox added a fifth run in the bottom of the sixth, when Pesky singled in Dom DiMaggio.

Other National League scores: Chicago 5 St. Louis; Cleveland 4 Detroit 3; Philadelphia 2 Washington 0.
