HAPLESS SENATORS FIND WAY TO BEAT BOSTON
The much maligned Washington Senators, about whom people quip, “First in war, first in peace and last in the American League”, found a way to get past our Red Sox, as they came out on top, 5-4 at Fenway.
Red Sox starter, Joe Dobson was shaky, giving up two runs on seven hits in just four innings. He also walked three and surrendered a homer to Clyde Vollmer.
Ed Stevens(3) remains hot for Boston, getting his second homerun in as many days. He added a pair of doubles as well.
The Red Sox got an unearned run in the third, and took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth, when Bobby Doerr singled in Dom DiMaggio.
However, Walt Masterson was ineffective out of the bullpen, allowing two Washington runs on two hits and two walks, in the top of the sixth.
Boston would again tie the game in the bottom of the eighth. Ted Williams singled and Stevens’ second two bagger moved him to third. Al Zarilla fanned, but Birdie Tebbetts singled in Williams to make it 4-4.
Once again, though, the Red Sox couldn’t hold the Senators back. Earl Johnson(0-2) issued a leadoff double to Sam Dente. A passed ball by Tebbetts pushed the go ahead run to third, then John Simmons’ sacrifice fly put Washington up, 5-4.
Johnny Pesky managed a one out single in the last of the ninth, but then Doerr and Williams went down quietly.
Other American League scores: New York 3 Philadelphia 2; Detroit and Chicago-ppd. Those were the only games scheduled.
