RED SOX GET BY A’S IN SLUGFEST
Boston defeated the Philadelphia A’s, 11-7, in a slugfest at Fenway Park. It was nice to see the Red Sox offense come to life, with Dom DiMaggio going 4-5 and Billy Goodman smacking a couple doubles. Bobby Doerr(1) collected his first homerun of the year.
However, the crimson hose’s pitching staff has been far from stellar. 3 Red Sox pitchers combined to allow 7 runs on 12 hits, while giving up five free passes.
Tex Hughson relived starter, Mike McDermott(2-0), holding an 11-4 lead, and surrendered four straight hits and three runs in just .2 innings.
But thanks to 3 A’s errors, which gave Boston six unearned runs, the home team was able to hold on for the win.
Other American League scores: Cleveland 11 Chicago 3; St. Louis 4 Detroit 3; Washington 4 New York 3.
