MEL PARNELL GETS SECOND SHUTOUT IN THREE STARTS
One day after grumbles from the Boston press about the state of Red Sox pitching, Mel Parnell (2-0)silenced the critics with a three hit shutout, his second whitewash in three starts.
Parnell stopped the Philadelphia A’s on 0 runs, 3 hits, 5 strikeouts and two walks. Granted, the A’s are not the Yankees, whom the Red Sox will play next, but it’s fine pitching, nonetheless.
Not lost in the shuffle was a wonderful day at the plate for Johnny Pesky(1). The Red Sox third sacker hit his first homerun, a three run clout in the sixth, and also singled twice and walked twice to complete a four rbi day.
On the other hand, the pop in Ted Williams’ bat seems to have disappeared. He was 0-4 with a walk.
Now it’s off to Yankee Stadium for a three game series with the first place Yanks.
Other American League scores: St. Louis 9 Detroit 6; Chicago 6 Washington 2. Only other games scheduled.
