RED SOX LEAVE BASES LOADED 3 TIMES, LOSE IN TEN INNINGS
Despite the N.Y. Yankees walking ten, Boston could not manage to push more than one run across the plate, losing, 2-1 in ten innings.
Incredibly, the Red Sox left the bases loaded in three different innings. In the top of the fifth, the inning in which the Sox got their only run, here’s what happened: Al Zarilla led off with a walk, then Birdie Tebbetts lined out to second base. Billy Goodman and starting pitcher, Joe Dobson each walked, loading the bases. Dom DiMaggio struck out, then Johnny Pesky walked, forcing in a run. Bobby Doerr then grounded out to first.
The Yankees tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Phil Rizzuto doubled and was later singled in by Tommy Henrich.
The very next inning, the process practically repeated itself. Joe Page had taken over for Yankee starter, Byrne. He walked Ted Williams and Vern Stephens back to back, before getting Zarilla to fly out. Tebbetts then walked for the second time, loading the bases again. Page buckled down and fanned both Goodman and pinch hitter, Billy Stringer, to get out of the jam.
Then in the top of the seventh, Williams walked for the third time in the game. Stephens singled and Zarilla singled, loading the bases yet again. Tebbets then lofted a fly ball to Henrich in right. Williams, not known as a blazer, tried to score, and was gunned down at the plate. Goodman then flew out to left.
Jack Kramer(0-1) was on the hill in the tenth for Boston. He served up a lead off double to Joe Coleman. Then Rizzuto singled him in with the winning run.
A frustrating and disappointing day for the Red Sox.
